Reading. This is one of the most basic topics for an essay, but is perhaps the least understood by students. It is the reading component of the Essay. Reading must be fluid. This means that you must be able to read at a rapid pace, read some essays at a slower pace, and also read others at a faster pace. Many schools insist that you must read one topic per paragraph. Since most students do not have the time or the discipline to do this, you will want to cut it off somewhere in the middle. The essay is usually about one paragraph. However, for GRE Essay topics such as vocabulary, Rhetoric, and Grammar, the reading portion can be about four paragraphs long. That's a lot of reading! Essay topics with lots of reading tend to be a bit more difficult to write. When you are forced to figure out a problem from the context and from the passage, it becomes almost impossible to come up with something original. If you can focus on the sentences and then work backwards to the paragraphs, then you will be able to develop a strong argument and still make sure that you leave the reader thinking. Writing. Writing is a skill that students are taught to master at school. While most teachers would rather students know about the different topics and the ways that they can be used, some teachers feel that this could interfere with learning. When we write, we use a lot of words. Writing an essay is the same. However, the writing does not end with the verbal component. There is still the writing portion of the essay. An essay must include good research, and when I say good, I mean extensive research. Good research is required when you are preparing for your essay to be accepted, which means that you have to know where to look, what to look for, and who to talk to. Using a combination of reading, writing, and reading and writing will help you make your essay more creative, relevant, and interesting.
